West Australian Ballet

The Red Shoes

Ballet’s most romantic love story comes to Sydney for the first time.

Based on the much loved 1948 movie starring Moira Shearer, Robert Helpmann and Leonide Massine, The Red Shoes tells the tale of a beautiful ballerina torn between her two passions – ballet, and the man she loves.

The director of a famous dance company hires a brilliant composer and a gifted young dancer to work on a new masterpiece entitled “The Red Shoes”. The ballet director becomes infatuated with the dancer and is fanatical in his ambition for her to succeed – ambition she shares. When she falls in love with the charismatic composer, a jealous triangle unfolds leaving the ballerina faced with the impossible task of choosing between her two great loves.

The Red Shoes is the work of internationally acclaimed choreographer Simon Dow, featuring the talented dancers of West Australian Ballet. With magnificent costumes and elaborate sets, the ballet showcases the stylistic elements of the original film’s 1940s era. The Ballet’s score includes excerpts from Prokofiev’s The Stone Flower and Chout.
