Breakout

New Plays, New Perspectives

BREAKOUT is Riverside Theatre’s development arm, designed to foster a vibrant Western Sydney voice and identity for Riverside stages. Selected new plays by established and emerging playwrights writing work relevant to Western Sydney audiences or who are based in the area, are supported with rehearsed readings or workshops under the guidance of professional directors and actors with the aim of establishing a group of writers of professional standard, based at Riverside.

Work developed through BREAKOUT includes All The Blood and All The Water by Suzie Miller, Brilliant Monkey by Alan Dukes and Men, Love and the Monkeyboy by Caleb Lewis, all of which have since been produced professionally.

HIS MOTHER'S VOICE
by Justin Fleming

When a Young Chinese pianist becomes embroiled in a diplomatic incident in Canberra, attention focuses on the remarkable but dangerous gift of music which he received from his mother, a courageous woman who dared to defy Mao's Cutural Revolution. Power is pitted against freedom of artistic expression in a debate that is inflamed by the clash of cultural idealism between China and the west. The situation becomes even more problematic because of the Australian family into which he has married.
